What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I love outdoor activity, especially early morning surf sessions, mountaineering in the High Sierra, training hikes in San Diego’s backcountry, and kayak fishing off La Jolla. At home, I unwind in the evenings playing 6 and 12-string acoustic guitar.

If you were to look back from the age of 80 and tell yourself anything what would it be?
That I’ve lived a complete life, served as a reliable guide and provider for my family, maintained a wonderful circle of friends, never stopped learning new ideas, and have arrived at the age of 80 in good enough physical and mental condition to continue surfing. I want to be that old-timer you occasionally see out in the water, just not too soon!

What’s one fact about your education or upbringing that few people know?
In high school, I worked nights, weekends, and summers as a freelance photographer. I had a variety of clients, including the La Jolla Light newspaper which alone published over 300 of my photos.

What are 2 things on your bucket list?
I’d like to return to New Zealand and Australia for additional exploration with my wife Holly, and hike the wild canyon lands that are spread out across southern Utah.
